from one faux-jewish virgin to another, you are totally getting menorah salad some time this summer.

yeah, that is quite some sculpture . . . what was the title? . . . just got distracted thinking about what the artist's description was like . . .

since we are on the topic (ahem, penises & art, in case you forgot) i have a piece of art to contribute. i found this in my art in america magazine and actually thought it was quite genius.
the artists are tim nobel and sue webster and the piece is called black narcissus. here's the description (i can't find a photo online so i will just scan it later)
"What a mess the unconscious is!" the artists say, essentially. It just goes its own bloody way--doesn't it?--regardless of how the world's protocols (e.g., minding one's manners in an art gallery) would have us behave otherwise. In an adjacent Deitch room, a spotlit clot of black rubber casts of Noble's penis (perhaps not quite the scale of the late John Holmes's, but impressive nevertheless) and Webster's fingers magically throws a double shadow portrait of the artists upon a wall. This particular couple's unconscious is apparently a lot neater and more targeted than everybody else's: just a little heterosexual hand-job.

yeah. it really is just a giant sculpture of hands and penises but the shadow self portraits are amazing!

on other news, i think the shoes look cute with the dress and will snap some pictures later.
happy wednesday my friend!

a thing of beauty

A sculpture found at a gallery in Chattanooga. On sale.

You HAVE to make candle salad for my bachelorette party! Please, oh please?

I am just writing a quick blog, because I don't have time....which is how much of a bad-ass rebel I am! Sending you a nice little picture for your moment of zen, and requesting nicely that you send a picture of the dress for gib's wedding. I was having a hard time picturing it yesterday, and this morning, I started thinking about it again and was thoroughly confused. Also, I've made peace with the hideous dress, and think that if I think cute thoughts, all will be well. I mean, you'll still be my friend even if wear this dress, right?

anywhoo, hope you're having a lovely tuesday!

pots, cups, vases and lilacs

Hello, dear friend.
Today has been a delightfully springy day. I went for a walk with Amanda, and we had lunch on the deck. The lilacs in the front yard are in full regalia, so I decided to clip some, to show off my new pottery. Yesterday, Jake and I went to see our friend, Patrick, who is a potter. He just finished up his MFA at Eastern, and we wanted to purchase a few of his pieces before he moves. We got the light vase (with an ancient Chinese glaze named "Chen") and darker mug (with an American glaze from the 1960's) you see here, plus coffee mug and Chinese-style tea cup. It was fascinating to talk to Patrick about his work. He is very knowledgeable about, not just his craft, but also history and philosophy and chemistry. I learned so much about sodium bicarbonate's role in glaze-coloring, how to salt-fire a piece, and why some German beer steins have faces. Patrick's philosophy regarding his work is intriguing as well. I am posting it below.

"I am unconcerned with whether ceramics is considered art. What does concern me is how we related to these functional, utilitarian objects in an artistic way. We should not expect to understand a painting in the dark, nor a sculpture in two dimensions. Why then should we expect to understand pots without considering their function?

It is that relationship that I find interesting because it asks so little from the viewer. It cares not for age, education, gender, nationality, or personal belief structures. It allows anyone to come to some understanding of the work, if by no other means than by its function. It allows for a direct connection between the viewer and the work, and then by extension the potter." -Patrick Andrew Green

back on the treadmill

Whew! I had no sooner got off the phone with you when I felt the deluge of being "back". Mom wants shower invite lists and program decisions. Fifty million people seem to have emailed me in my absence, and maybe half that have also left messages on my voicemail. I am packing (again!) because tonight is youth group, tomorrow morning is our meeting with Uncle Mark, and from there Jake and I are going to his potter-friend's studio to pick out a platter or something. Fun, good, necessary all of it. I just did not expect things to pick up so soon. And then, I looked at my planner and see that Gib's bachelorette party is NEXT WEEKEND! Holy mother of god.

On top of that, I can't find my copy of "diary". It's either in a landfill somewhere or in storage in the basement. hmmm.

Well, I am eating a piece of chocolate, that's just all there is to it.

just finished reading diary. it took me a couple days to read it but i am slow so it will take you about a minute . . .

it was good--apparently these hipster boys we know are good with the book recommendations.

i know you have a long list of books to read, but once you read this you must let me know what you think. horror story or commentary on *the scene* . . . and the format, all of the reoccurring phrases . . . like i said i want to hear your thoughts. come on nic, read fast. hurry hurry, you know i can't decide what i think until i talk things over with you!!

ok, ok just kidding. maybe.

just for the record, the weather today is avid, will a hint of over-stimulation.
